Site 8 is adjacent to Placeta de Charlot, named after Carmelo Tusquellas, a comedic bullfighter known as Charlot. Despite its lively namesake, the square currently has a monotonous and desolate atmosphere. The wall lacks interaction with the square and remains underutilized. Our goal is to explore a new identity for both the wall and the square. We propose giving the wall a new "mask," similar to how Tusquellas used a comical mask to entertain. This new mask aims to bring whimsical joy to residents. Inspired by abstract expressionist painters who used shapes to convey mood and emotion, we balanced geometric shapes on the wall, focusing on their forms, relationships, and rhythms.
The wall will have four main layers: (1) the existing wall, (2) a rammed earth wall, (3) steel plate shapes, and (4) photovoltaic panels. Approximately 50cm of (2) rammed earth wall and insulation will be added to the (1) existing wall, harmonizing with surrounding buildings, providing insulation, and creating an eco-friendly base. Each floor will have new operable windows to improve ventilation and lighting. This refinished earth wall might evoke the imagery of Tusquellas' bullfighting stage. Above this, (3) large, simple geometric shapes will be humorously and unpredictably arranged, adding new rhythm and vitality. Instead of stacking like bricks, they connect point-to-point, creating tension. These shapes will also serve as interactive elements, such as street lamps and benches. Within these shapes, (4) photovoltaic panels will be arranged, utilizing renewable energy and changing shadow patterns with seasons and time of day, adding vibrancy.
Beyond improving the wall's appearance, we aim to inject new life into Placeta de Charlot and its surroundings. We propose extending these shapes to the square, designating activity areas for residents. Children could have play areas, while adults could have contemplative spaces. The arrangement of shapes on the ground provides visual enjoyment from various angles. This project enhances the value of the wall and square, giving the area a new identity and character. The transformed wall will invigorate the local community, fostering interaction and pride. Placeta de Charlot will become a vibrant space for gathering, interaction, and enjoyment, marking an important first step in improving residents' quality of life.
